Elstree Hill modernist garden

Project type

Design and build

Date

2015

Location

Bromley, London

A very challenging garden wrapping around the house situated on a steep slope. Our client, being a keen gardener, briefed us to create a design that gave some accessibility and growing space on the previously inaccessible slope around the house.
The brief was for a modern unique garden featuring as much planting as possible and with a budget of £65k. Inspired by brutalist architecture we designed a series of interconnected retaining walls of imprinted concrete, creating four terraces that wrap around two sides of the house.
We created an innovative method for constructing poured concrete cladding imprinted with wood grain, inspired by the clients love of the architecture of the South Bank Centre in London.
The front garden was designed to create a private and tranquil entrance courtyard with a seating area to catch the evening sun. Storage was provided by a bespoke shed-on-stilts at the top of the hill featuring its one green garden roof.
Needless to say we exceeded the clients expectations and were delighted with the results ourselves. It remains our masterpiece!
