Blackheath back terrace and front garden (with parking)

Project type

Front garden with parking

Date

2019

Location

Lee Road, Blackheath, London

A large (for Blackheath) front garden on a busy road that needed to accommodate parking for one car and do justice to the spectacular Georgian architecture of the house.
It was important that the garden sit lightly in the environment - was in keeping with the local vernacular. We used reclaimed London Stock bricks for the walling and light beige sandstone for the paving. Small edging sandstone setts add a refined bit of detailing and bled in the steps up to the house (that we also re-built).
Care was taken to preserve the existing topiary and a beautiful magnolia that always draws admiration from passers-by in springtime.
A permeable gravel-grid was used to reduce run-off and allow rainwater to penetrate the ground for the surrounding trees.
Finally an electric gate was installed to a bespoke design matching an original fineal style still in existence a few properties away on Lee Road.
The back garden consists of a sunken terrace adjoining the basement kitchen/dinner.
